What do Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, Steely Dan, and the Doobie Brothers all have in common?

Well for one thing, they all have produced music that is sometimes consigned with a unique classification:

Yacht Rock

Yacht Rock could be categorized as sporting an easy-going breed of musical sensibility, smacking of the sunny light and salt air of Southern California.  The style was birthed and nurtured between the mid-70’s and mid 80’s, with a mellow feel that just seems suited—then and now—to a blue blazer and a champagne toast while helming a significant sea-going vessel.

With timeless appeal like that, it’s no wonder that there

are cover bands exclusively focusing on the genre.  To

pay tribute to their chosen music genre, some of these cover bands actually outfit themselves in nautical attire before channeling the acts named above, plus Yacht Rock icons like Toto, Boz Scaggs, and Daryl Hall & John Oates.

One of the common strands of DNA with many Yacht Rock rockers are stage names that could perhaps best be described as irreverent.  There’s Virginia’s own Three Sheets to the Wind—with band members including Captain Max Power, Topper Dandy, and David Buoy.  Don’t miss The Knights of Monte Carlo, California-based yacht rockers whose members include Nelson JC Borealis, Brad Bayliner, and Bobby Colada.  And there’s the refreshingly honest Atlanta-based Yacht Rock Revue.   No fake stage names here, but their Facebook page describes their sound as “The music you listen to at the dentist’s office while getting your teeth cleaned.”

Yacht Rock Fans

Sure, there are plenty of 50-60-somethings who caught this music the first time around.  But some younger fans throng to shows as well: Three Sheets to the Wind will play more than 40 gigs this year, and the Yacht Rock Revue shows a busy tour schedule on their Facebook page.  No doubt some in attendance will be first-times, while others will simply be nostalgic for some familiar tunes and the unique taste of a Jack Daniels and Tab.

Yacht Rock is a Real Thing

Doubting how big this is?

Well, there’s a radio channel devoted full-time to Yacht

Rock–Channel 311 on SiriusXM.  It boasts playing the

kind of music that “doesn’t rock the boat…”

And if anyone still doubts the appeal of the craze, they should look no further than the online video series entitled (what else?) Yacht Rock.  The show followed the fictionalized careers of American soft rock stars of the late 1970s and early 1980s.   Yacht Rock debuted on Channel 101  and placed in the top five rankings at subsequent screenings.  And yes, while every good thing cannot last forever—the show was cancelled in 2006—but it remains a popular download on Channel 101 and video on YouTube.

Timeless music tied to the timeless tradition of seafaring—preferably in a well-appointed vessel—issure to last.

Songs crafted by artists like Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Daryl Hall & John Oates and more continue to play on the radio, be played by the artists to sell-out crowds, and remind fans of some of the all-time favorite songs and all-time favorite times as well.
