It’s the jet-setters lament:  traveling to exotic destinations is lots of fun, but the downside is jet lag.

If you’ve traveled via aircraft across several time zones, you know how it feels:  like you’re moving in slow motion, while the world has sped up.  You’re more forgetful, and the light may seem too bright.  You’re tired all over.

Jet lag is worse when you travel east.

There has been a lot of research on this topic, including in this study as well this one, but the short answer is:  you are not imagining it.  Jet-lag is real, and if you take off from Miami and travel to Paris, you’ll feel worse being six hours ahead in Paris than if you’d flown six hours behind to Honolulu

Physicists at the University of Maryland developed a mathematical model of the brain’s so-called “pacemaker cells.” In their model, they claim these cells are to blame, because they respond differently to time changes that are ahead versus behind the point of origin.

But you may not need to be a physicist to understand.  It’s relatively easy to stay up late—if your normal bedtime is 10pm, that same time equates to 4am in Honolulu—just a really late night.  But going to sleep early?  Much more difficult, and that 10pm time in Paris is only 4pm in Miami.

Circadian rhythms are another reason—our internal clock tells us when to wind up, and wind down.  At lunchtime in Paris, that means looking at the baguette may happen in an extremely exhausted state the first day of your arrival from a destination hours west.  The good news is that circadian rhythms do adjust.  Daylight is a primary factor, which is why some jet-lag experts will talk about getting a burst of light to help west-east travelers navigate through the first day abroad.

There are lots of other proposed cures as well, and some claim things like melatonin– a hormone which regulates circadian rhythms—but the FDA does not endorse any of them.  But there is a new proposed cure for jet-lag, a cure that has already proven to be wildly successful when prescribed to humans (invariably male) for another purpose:  Viagra.

Viagra for Jet-Lag?

Viagra, or technically sildenafil citrate, has been shown to speed recovery from jet-lag—at least in hamsters.  According to New Scientist,  hamsters given very small doses of Viagra were found to recover from jet-lag symptoms significantly faster than the control group.

Hamsters were exposed to laboratory simulations of a six-hour time-zone change, then given a very small—about 70 microgram– dose of the ‘little blue pill.’ The researchers found that the Viagra hamsters adapted up to 50% faster than the non-dosed rodents.  And for those who were wondering, yes the running wheel inside the hamster cage was a determining factor in recovery.

Or could it have been perhaps a little pent-up frustration?

Prematurely turned on

Researchers theorize that the Viagra helped because it raises the level of Viagra helps protect against jet lag because the drug raises levels of “cyclic guanosine monophosphate” (cGMP) in the body. cGMP levels being raised can increase the internal body clock in the brain.

cGMP in large enough doses—like those taken by humans—cause blood vessels to widen—including those used for male erection.  A comparable dose for humans to what the hamsters received would be a small fraction of that found in a typical Viagra tablet.

Of course, taking a full Viagra probably can’t hurt—and it might even pave the way to a passionate welcome to eastward destinations like Paris– the City of Love.
